Speaking

As it was previously said, intonation conveys speakers' feelings.

Now it's your turn to practice!

In pairs, you have to read the following sentences with different intonations, conveying different emotions.

You will alternate who reads each sentence. If you have some extra time, you can do your partner's sentences.

You can add more sentences to emphasize the meaning that you want to convey. For instance, if you want to say "You won the lottery?" being surprised, you could say: "You won the lottery? how is that possible, you never buy lottery tickets!"

- It's snowing

  • First: say it as if it was something surprising
  • Second: say it as if you didn't like it, you're angry or upset
  • Third: say it as if it was something scary

- It was you?

  • Say it as if it was surprising
  • Say it with indignation, you are angry
  • Say it being scared, you are frightened of that person
  • Say it with repulsion, it makes you sick

- Really?

  • Say it with sarcasm
  • Say it as if you doubted the other person (you are skeptical)
  • Say it as if you were interested in that information

- I really loved your gift

  • Say it with genuine enthusiasm (you are very happy)
  • Say it with sarcasm (you are lying)
  • Say it with disgust (it is something you find repulsive)
